A historical approach to scorpion studies with special reference to the 20 th and 21st centuries J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Lourenço,Wilson R.
This work provides historical context about scorpion studies from the end of the 19 th century to the present day. The content is mainly addressed to non-zoologists, working in research fields that embrace scorpion biology, notably to those working with venoms and toxins. The historical aspects described include academic professional scholars who worked on scorpion classification and general distribution patterns; and to a lesser extent, on studies of ecology and natural history. The aim is not to provide an exhaustive description of all scholars who in one way or another became involved with scorpions, but rather of those who greatly contributed during a given period to the research of these organisms. No critical analysis of the work of previous...

A re-evaluation of the Aricoris constantius group with the recognition of three species (Lepidoptera: Riodinidae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Callaghan,Curtis J..
Material currently classified under the name Aricoris constantius (Fabricius, 1793) is examined and found to consist of three distinct species inhabiting southeastern and central Brazil, from the Brazilian state of Bahia to Paraguay. They are A. constantius, A. tutana (Godart, [1824]), reinstated status and A. monotona (Stichel, 1910), reinstated status, the latter two removed from synonymy. Besides significant morphological differences in wing pattern and genitalia, their status as separate species is supported by their overlapping ranges where each phenotype is sympatric with at least one other, with no evidence of hybridization. Notes are provided on the habitat in open formations, range and distribution in south eastern Brasil, and biology, including...

Aran; Michaels, William; Mcquillan, Jonathan S.; Robidart, Julie C.; Churchill, James; Sourisseau, Marc; Daniel, Anne; Schaap, Allison; Monk, Sam; Friedman, Kim; Brehmer, Patrice.
Advancing our understanding of ocean biogeochemistry, biology, and ecosystems relies on the ability to make observations both in the ocean and at the critical boundaries between the ocean and other earth systems at relevant spatial and temporal scales. After decades of advancement in ocean observing technologies, one of the key remaining challenges is how to cost-effectively make measurements at the increased resolution necessary for illuminating complex system processes and rapidly evolving changes. In recent years, biogeochemical in situ sensors have been emerging that are threefold or more lower in cost than established technologies; the cost reduction for many biological in situ sensors has also been significant, although the absolute costs are still...

Age-dependent fecundity of Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) with sublethal doses of gammacyhalothrin BABT
Pereira,Alexandre Igor Azevedo; Ramalho,Francisco de Sousa; Bandeira,Catarina de Medeiros; Malaquias,José Bruno; Zanuncio,José Cola.
Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) was exposed to gammacyhalothrin to study the stimulatory effect of low concentrations of this pyrethroid. The doses studied were 23.4375, 11.7188, 5.8594, 2.9297, 1.4648, 0.7324 mg.litre-1 and water, as control. The third, fourth, and fifth instars of P. nigrispinus were shorter with all the doses of this insecticide. The survival and longevity of this predator was highest with the lowest doses. The oviposition period of P. nigrispinus decreased as the doses increased. The lowest pre-and postoviposition periods were found with 11.7188 mg.litre-1 of gammacyhalothrin. The dose 0.7324 mg.litre-1 increased the clutch interval. The egg viability was similar between the treatments. The number of eggs per...

Alternation of host plants as a survival mechanism of leafhoppers Dilobopterus costalimai and Oncometopia facialis (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae), vectors of the Citrus Variegated Chlorosis (CVC) Scientia Agricola
Milanez,José Maria; Parra,José Roberto Postali; Magri,Denise Cristina.
Dilobopterus costalimai (Young) and Oncometopia facialis (Signoret) are two of the most important species of citrus leafhoppers, vectors of bacterium Xylella fastidiosa which causes the Citrus Variegated Chlorosis (CVC) disease. To develop a rearing technique for these species under laboratory conditions, the egg laying preference and nymph development were studied in different breeding systems: Rangpur lime (Citrus limonia) and "falso boldo" (Vernonia condensata) as host plants. Trials were set up in a randomized block design with three treatments (n=8). Females of D. costalimai had particular preference for ovipositing on Rangpur lime leaves while O. facialis females placed a higher number of eggs on "falso boldo", but it did not differ statistically...

Animal models in biological and biomedical research - experimental and ethical concerns Anais da ABC (AABC)
ANDERSEN,MONICA L.; WINTER,LUCILE M.F..
ABSTRACT Animal models have been used in experimental research to increase human knowledge and contribute to finding solutions to biological and biomedical questions. However, increased concern for the welfare of the animals used, and a growing awareness of the concept of animal rights, has brought a greater focus on the related ethical issues. In this review, we intend to give examples on how animals are used in the health research related to some major health problems in Brazil, as well as to stimulate discussion about the application of ethics in the use of animals in research and education, highlighting the role of National Council for the Control of Animal Experimentation (Conselho Nacional de Controle de Experimentação Animal - CONCEA) in these...

Annotated checklist of the gall midges from the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) Naturalis
Roskam, J.C.; Carbonnelle, S..
The gall midges are one of the most important groups of gall makers. Emerging larvae produce stimuli and the host plant responds by producing galls, fascinating structures which provide food and shelter for the developing larvae. Most gall inducing midges are host specific: they are only able to induce galls in a few, often related, plant species. A few species have different feeding modes: among them are saprophagous, fungivorous and predaceous species and some are used in biocontrol. We recorded 416 species in the whole area; 366 species are recorded from the Netherlands, 270 species from Belgium and 96 species from Luxembourg.

Antarctic climate change and the environment ArchiMer
Convey, P.; Bindschadler, R.; Di Prisco, G.; Fahrbach, E.; Gutt, J.; Hodgson, D. A.; Mayewski, P. A.; Summerhayes, C. P.; Turner, J.; ACCE CONSORTIUM.
The Antarctic climate system varies on timescales from orbital, through millennial to sub-annual, and is closely coupled to other parts of the global climate system. We review these variations from the perspective of the geological and glaciological records and the recent historical period from which we have instrumental data (similar to the last 50 years). We consider their consequences for the biosphere, and show how the latest numerical models project changes into the future, taking into account human actions in the form of the release of greenhouse gases and chlorofluorocarbons into the atmosphere. In doing so, we provide an essential Southern Hemisphere companion to the Arctic Climate Impact Assessment.

Argyrotaenia sphaleropa (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in citrus in the State of Paraná, Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Meneguim,Ana M.; Hohmann,Celso L..
Argyrotaenia sphaleropa (Meyrick) is associated with various fruit species in South America. This tortricid was first detected in citrus, Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck, in Brazil, in commercial groves in northern Paraná, during the 1994/95-crop season. The aim of this work was to study the biology of this lepidopteran under laboratory conditions (28 ± 2ºC, 70 ± 10% UR, 14h photofase) using the citrus cultivar Pêra. Larvae obtained from egg masses collected in a commercial citrus grove in Rolândia, PR, were individually placed on citrus terminal leaves inside glass shell vials (8.5 x 2.5 cm) until adulthood. A male and a female moth were then transferred to acrylic cages (13 x 10 cm) containing inside a bouquet made with new citrus flush to serve as...

The architecture and biology of Euplusia mussitans (Fabricius, 1787) nests were investigated, using trap nests made by wood, which were randomly distributed in a fragment of a coastal sand dunes, in Salvador, Bahia. Brazil (12º56'S and 38º21'W). 10 nests were found in cavities with 1.5 cm in diameter. From them emerged 10 females and 16 males (Sex ratio = 0,38). The nest cells were made of small pieces of bark cemented together with resin. The number of cells in the nests varied from 2 to 4, with females cells at the inner end and males cells towards the entrance. No significant difference was observed (t= 0.7274, P > 0.05) between the medium size for males (6.3 mm ± 0.16) and for females (6.4 mm ± 0.29). The development time of females was longer than...
